Protecting the Amazon from the sky
This Black Friday we are picking an Amazon that we don’t want to see slashed in the sales, we are donating all our income from Black Friday weekend to raise funds for the drone programme in the East Amazon.
2024 has been a year of tragedy for the usually rich Amazonian forests that the Kayapō have called home for millennia. The demarcated lands of the Kayapō are under almost constant threat from illegal logging and encroachment but now, as the effects of climate change become felt, forest fires are becoming a disturbing new normal for the tribes who live from and protect the land, land where we source our Tonka from used in Beån and other fragrances. Tonka is the bean of the Dipteryx Odorata tree, ana Amazonian hardwood tree that thrives in these lands and is threatened by loss of habitat through logging and fires.
Manned ‘Guard posts’ that have been setup by the Kayapo to monitor the boundaries of the land are using other methods to survey this complex problem. Drones have been introduced in the last few years as vital and swift way to view the forest from above.
Boundary surveys on foot that cut through dense forest can be timely and require many people, the addition of drones to the suite of responses allow for rapid and accurate response to the situation that other forms of aerial surveying can’t offer. Even high definition satellite imagery aren’t as accurate as drone monitoring which gives a clearer, closer and quicker way to get to difficult and inhospitable areas.
The drones can be early warning or even pre-emptive identifiers of issues in the forest, in particular fires which, if controlled quickly can be extinguished or at least provide warning to at threat communities.
Although it’s a sad fact that we are witnessing the dramatic shift in the ecological and hydrological function of the Amazon, we are asking for some support to make a positive move against this and in support of the Kayapō.
How Much?
A drone costs around £10,000 and can be flown for several kilometres over the rainforests. We hope to contribute to the total fund raising efforts for the drone with your support throughout the next 12 months but for now lets give a boost to efforts to protect the Amazon for the future.
